Despite being without Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti, Italy won the Davis Cup, which will continue until Sunday in Bologna, and advanced to the semifinals.
Matteo Berrettini defeated Yuri Rodionov in straight sets (6-3, 7-6) to secure the first point for the Italians in their quarterfinal against Austria. The Roman tennis player won the first set with a break in the eighth game and struggled in the second, coming back from 2-5 down, even saving three set points for the Austrian. He then prevailed in the tiebreak.
That's not all, because Italy also won their second singles match in the quarterfinals against Austria, thus qualifying as the second semifinalist. Italian Flavio Cobolli defeated Filip Misolic in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-3. Italy's next match will be against Belgium—who defeated France yesterday—on Friday.
