Revealed with a first trailer behind closed doors during this year's D23 Expo, "Daredevil: Born Again" has finally shown its features. The television series created by Marvel Studios, starring the devil of Hell's Kitchen with extraordinary psychic abilities, takes on the difficult task of competing on equal terms with the Netflix show "Daredevil" released since 2015, whose unanimous success with audiences and critics led to the creation of three seasons, in addition to the spin-off series "The Punisher" and the crossover miniseries "The Defenders".
The mix of winning choices that made the television adaptation of “Daredevil” a completely unexpected triumph - undoubtedly thanks to the mature tones uncommon in a comic book production and a cast that boasts names of the caliber of Vincent D'Onofrio - has certainly raised the bar of expectations for the revival. Inspired by one of the iconic storylines created by Frank Miller, “Daredevil - Born Again” is at the top of the most ambitious Marvel productions, after a rather troubled gestation period that motivated the postponement of the project to March 2025, three years after the announcement made at the 2022 edition of San Diego Comic-Con. Along with the indispensable Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio, respectively the interpreters of Matt Murdock / Daredevil and the ruthless Kingpin, Jon Bernthal will also return to the series in the role of Frank Castle / The Punisher.
With a total of eighteen episodes, it promises to be a deeper and more complex narrative than the latest productions aired on Disney+. In this regard, in an interview with Rotten Tomatoes, D'Onofrio hinted that the show will maintain the dark atmospheres known in the past, but will be even more crude and violent: "There is one thing in particular, that my character does, that I can't believe was included in the editing".
It is also known that Marvel's initial plans were to erase the old history with "Daredevil" and start over with "Born Again". Charlie Cox confirmed this last month, revealing the following: "Elden was not originally invited to be on the show... They wrote a cameo in the first episode to tie it in with the old series and give the old fans some closure, but they took him out of the new version."
We do know, however, that plans for the project have changed following a creative review, and many actors who appeared in the past such as Deborah Ann Woll and Elden Henson will return to the series. Interviewed by Entertainment Weekly, Cox expressed his enthusiasm also in memory of the good times spent with his colleagues on the set of the old episodes: «The first day on set with Deborah, me and Elden was really special because the scene we were shooting was a scene where we were reminiscing about old times and all the things we had done together. And it happened that we shot it after we hadn't seen each other in years. Maybe not years, but we hadn't seen each other in a long time. So there was literally no acting needed. The conversation we were having in the green room was the same conversation we were having in the scene, basically».
And continuing with the anecdotes, he added: «Deborah and I shot a scene where we find an old box - am I allowed to say this? I think I can say this - we shot this scene where we find these objects from the past, and they were real things from the past. They were things from the old show. We were reminiscing together, and it was sweet. It was kind of like life imitating art. I'm really impressed with what the writers were able to do in allowing us to keep that story but also present it in a way that's not alienating».
