How much is a shopping trip for Christmas in Sardinia worth? According to Confartigianato estimates, almost 700 million euros with the involvement of 8 thousand artisan businesses on the island.

The basket includes food and drinks, objects of consumption during convivial moments during the holidays, and many other products that can be given as gifts, as well as catering and accommodation services.

«The data demonstrate how consumers prefer to purchase products and services made by local artisans and micro small businesses – comment Maria Amelia Lai and Daniele Serra, president and secretary of Confartigianato Imprese Sardegna – choosing products and services made by these small businesses means supporting not only the entrepreneur and his employees, and therefore their families, but also contribute to the transmission of the culture crystallized in artisan knowledge as well as to the well-being of the community, guaranteeing both the remuneration of work and local production factors and the tax revenue necessary to support the welfare system". «It also means that customers believe in local productions, workshops and artisan shops – continue Lai and Serra – which offer products and services characterized by craftsmanship based on the value of work, on listening to the customer and on the personalization of the product , which is associated with the high quality of the raw materials and products produced."

Among the gifts and purchases, made by the island's artisan businesses, that the Sardinians will buy and exchange during these holidays, in addition to delicacies, wines and spirits, also clothes and jewellery, furniture, home textiles, glassware, crockery and household utensils, home and garden tools and equipment, games, toys, sporting goods, books, stationery and drawing materials and personal care services.

According to the survey by the Association of Artisans of Sardinia, the holidays linked to Christmas, as is customary, significantly change consumers' spending habits: in December the value of retail sales exceeds the annual average by 28.3%.

From a provincial perspective, family spending in December, again analyzing the products of "Santa's sleigh", amounts to 210 million in Sassari (of which 142 food and drinks), 184 million in Cagliari (125 food and drinks), 141 million in the province of Southern Sardinia (95 food and drinks), 87 million in Nuoro (59 food and drinks) and 64 million in Oristano (43 food and drinks).
