Milan lost 1-0 in Rotterdam against Feyenoord, in the first leg of the Champions League play-offs. The Dutch team had not won a match in the knockout phase of the tournament (at the time it was still called the Champions Cup) since 1974. An early goal by Igor Paixão was the deciding factor: in the 3rd minute he shot from the left towards the near post, Maignan let the ball slip and it went into the net.
Milan's attempts to reopen the game were in vain, despite several offensive players. Coach Sérgio Conceição appeared rather nervous in the post-match: he left the press conference after just one question .
