Pathology In-depth Analysis:

Myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism are all vision disorders that can cause difficulty focusing an image on the retina of the eye.

Myopia is a condition in which the eye is too long for its refractive power, meaning that light focuses in front of the retina rather than on it. This makes it difficult to see distant objects clearly, but near vision is usually clear.

Hyperopia, on the other hand, is a condition in which the eye is too short for its refractive power, meaning that light focuses behind the retina rather than on it. This makes it difficult to see close objects clearly, but distance vision may be relatively clear.

Astigmatism is another condition in which the shape of the cornea or lens of the eye is irregular, making it difficult to focus light into one precise spot on the retina. This can cause blurry or distorted vision both near and far.

In all three cases, glasses or contact lenses can usually be used to correct vision, improving the quality of vision and reducing eye strain and headaches. But for many years now, this slavery to glasses and contact lenses has been overshadowed by the possibility of completely correcting vision by resorting to refractive surgery. In particular, LASIK surgery has become the most popular in the world for the correction of these vision defects, giving freedom to millions of people who have already undergone this procedure.

The LASIK technique:

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a vision correction procedure that can be used to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. This technique uses an excimer laser to reshape the cornea, which is the first clear surface of the eye that helps focus light onto the retina.

Before the procedure, the patient undergoes a series of complete eye exams, quick and completely non-invasive, to evaluate his/her suitability for the procedure. This series of exams includes a measurement of the curvature of the cornea, a corneal topography, Tomography with Pentacam and with the MS39 (laser tomograph), of the depth of the anterior chamber of the eye and the diameter of the pupil in various light conditions (low, medium, high brightness), OCT exam of the macula and the optic nerve, Measurement of intraocular pressure and thickness of the cornea, Check of the central and peripheral retina, evaluation of tear production. All these exams are usually performed in a short time without invasive procedures and constitute a careful and timely evaluation of the general ocular health, allowing a very precise judgment to be expressed on the possibility of undergoing Lasik surgery for the correction of the refractive defects present.

It should be noted that today, it is possible to correct a very wide variety of refractive defects, albeit with different techniques. Therefore, in the case that, for example, the amount of myopia is too high for the LASIK technique, it will be possible to evaluate an alternative technique, which does not thin the cornea and which, through the implantation of intraocular lenses (ICL), allows the correction of up to 18 diopters of myopia associated with astigmatism of up to 7 diopters.

During the LASIK procedure, a microkeratome is used to create a thin flap on the surface of the cornea, or this flap can be created using another laser: the FEMTOLASER. This flap is gently folded to expose the underlying corneal tissue. The excimer laser is then used to reshape the cornea, removing minute amounts (MICRON = THOUSANDTHS OF A MILLIMETER) of tissue to correct the irregular curvature of the eye.

After the laser treatment is complete, the corneal flap is carefully replaced on the surface of the eye. The flap will naturally adhere to the underlying tissue and heal quickly.

The only sensation you may feel is a slight pressure during LASIK surgery, which is generally well tolerated. The procedure takes only a few minutes for each eye, and you can go home the same day, without any bandages.

LASIK vision correction is a safe and effective procedure that provides remarkable results for the correction of nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.

Of course, as with any medical procedure, preoperative conditions must be considered, as will be evident from the preliminary examination evaluations. It will be important to be able to discuss every detail with the patient, before proceeding with the surgery. Our doctors and in particular the surgeon will be happy to give all the details about the patient's situation and the LASIK procedure.

For over thirty years now, Centro Vista has been performing LASIK surgeries, we were the first in Sardinia to adopt this technique. Thousands of cases have been treated and they are increasing every year.
