There are 1,590,000 residents in Sardinia as of 31 December 2020 and, compared to the previous year, 21,577 people are missing. But other information also emerges from the data relating to the population census: 56.5% live in the provinces of Sassari and Cagliari which together cover 37.1% of the territory and in two years (2019 and 2020), there is there was a decrease in all provinces (-1.4% on average), to a lesser extent in the province of Cagliari (-0.3%) and more consistent in the others: Nuoro and South Sardinia -1.8%, Sassari and Oristano -1.7%.

Only 46 of the 377 municipalities between 2019 and 2020 did not suffer population losses and among these is Oristano (15 more units). Those with a decreasing population are 331, almost 88%. In absolute value, the most significant losses are recorded in the capitals of Sassari (-2.767) and Cagliari (-1.433) while in relative terms in the municipalities of Semestene (-9.2%, in the province of Sassari) and Magomadas (-6.2 %, in the province of Oristano).

In 2020, the year of the pandemic, due to causes directly or indirectly attributable to Covid, the death rate increased from 10.5 per thousand in 2019 to 11.7 per thousand in 2020, lower values if compared with national averages. Between 2019 and 2020 the birth rate fell from 5.5 to 5.2 per thousand, with a marked decrease in the provinces of Sassari (from 5.9 to 5.4 per thousand) and Nuoro (from 5.8 to 5.4 per thousand).

While the average age, up compared to 2019, is 47.3 years against 45.4 of the national average. At the municipal level, Girasole in Ogliastra has the lowest average age (42.2 years) and Semestene in the province of Sassari has the highest (60.1 years).

Finally, the foreign population of Sardinia amounts to 49,322 residents, with a decrease of about 3 thousand units (-5.7%). As for the distribution by citizenship, in 2020 about half (46.4%) of foreign citizens residing in the region come from Europe, 28.4% from Africa, 19.6% from Asia and 5.6% % from America. The presences from Oceania and stateless persons are residual.
