Among the main tourist resorts in Italy and abroad, the highest costs for renting a car in August are those recorded in Sardinia. The result emerges from the survey conducted by the regional Adiconsum.

The island, in this way, "confirms itself as a very salty summer destination not only because of the expensive transport, with the prices of airplanes and ferries that have reached very high levels, but also for the costs of car rental services".

Taking for example a small engine vehicle (city car or small car) for 7 days, in the period between 13 and 20 August 2022, "you spend in Olbia (airport) from a minimum of 699 euros to a maximum of 1,032 euros - analyzes Adiconsum - For a larger car, it ranges from a minimum of € 1,107 to a maximum of € 3,283 ”. Without considering additional services such as additional insurance, second driver, child seats, etc.

In Alghero , “whoever lands at the airport and wants to rent a car, spends from a minimum of 699 euros to a maximum of 1,289 euros. In Cagliari you spend from a minimum of 692 euros to a maximum of 1,005 euros ".

While, on the same dates, “hiring a small car costs from 624 to 1,651 euros in Salento (Brindisi airport), from 631 to 957 euros in Palermo, from 645 to 897 euros in Catania. In Rome Fiumicino minimum 559 euros, maximum 793 euros, while if you rent a car at Malpensa the cost drops to 542 euros the minimum rate and the maximum cost is 831 euros ".

Therefore, explains the association, “to rent a small car in Olbia you therefore spend + 12% compared to Puglia, + 10.9% compared to Sicily, + 25% in Rome and + 29% in Milan.

Then the comparison with foreign destinations: "Compared to Greece (in Crete 490 euros for 7 days of rental), up to 42.8% more is spent in Sardinia, + 19.4% compared to Croatia (586 euros in Split), + 8.5% on Palma de Mallorca (645 euros), + 11.1% on Ibiza (630 euros), and even + 231% on Malta, where just 211 euros are enough to rent a car for seven days ".

"After the prices of ferries and airplanes, expensive rental also threatens tourism in Sardinia - underlines the president Giorgio Vargiu - In fact, those who need to rent a car to move and visit the island must pay significantly higher rates than other places with a strong tourist vocation , although the service provided to users is exactly the same. An element is that of rental costs which, together with prohibitive rates for ferries and airplanes, could drive tourists away from Sardinia this summer and push them to cheaper locations with family-friendly prices ".
