The footballer Armando Izzo sentenced to five years' imprisonment for external competition in a mafia association and sports fraud . According to the indictment, the Monza defender influenced the match between Modena and Avellino (the team he played for) in May 2014, which ended with a score of 1-0.

Cousin Izzo, Umberto Accursio, head of one of the Camorra clans of Secondigliano, and Salvatore Russo were also convicted. In particular, the footballer, together with his comrades Millesi and Pini, would have placed himself at the disposal of the clan to " act as an intermediary and bribe professional players, with the aim of fraudulently influencing the results of football matches in the Serie B championship : events on which the apical exponents of Vanella bet by investing illicit proceeds of the association».

On this occasion Accursio made a 400,000 euro bet on the success of Modena , earning 60,000. According to the sentence, Izzo would have accepted, in an agreement dating back to three days before the match, a "compensation in order to achieve a different result from the one resulting from the correct and fair conduct of the competition".
