Cagliari secured their third consecutive win, and they did so with a stunning performance that brought them much closer to safety: 4-0 against bottom-placed Verona, an 11-point advantage over third-last. Mazzitelli and Kılıçsoy scored two first-half goals, while Sulemana and Idrissi struck late.
For the third consecutive match, Pisacane fielded the same formation: 4-3-3 for the Rossoblu, with Palestra further forward . Sarr was immediately booked in the 6th minute for an attacking foul on Mazzitelli. In the 9th minute, Caprile nearly faced a throw-in; Valentini's header went past him, but Luperto was positioned almost on the line to prevent any danger. Hellas took the lead, threatening in the 18th minute with an opening on the right for Orban, whose shot from inside the box went wide.
Cagliari made their first appearance in the 19th minute and came close to scoring. Mazzitelli acrobatically converted Esposito's free kick, parried on the edge of the box, and his finish was stunning, but Perilli also produced a marvelous dive to his right to tip the ball into a corner . Verona made their first substitution in the 29th minute, with Gagliardini coming off in pain (a suspected rib problem) and replaced by Lovrić, signed yesterday from Udinese.
Cagliari took the lead in the 36th minute with a stunning team effort. It all started—once again—with Palestra, who skipped past Valentini and Frese on the byline before crossing to Obert, whose backheel freed Mazzitelli for a left-footed shot that flew between the post and the keeper . The number 4 is increasingly central to the Rossoblu project, especially since Prati's departure: it's his second goal after his one against Juventus two Saturdays ago (in the other goal).
After the 1-0, Caprile was tested by a long-range shot from Slotsager, while in the 45th minute Esposito sent the ball over from the edge following a move by Palestra. In the third of three minutes of injury time (which later became six), Esposito's cross was countered by Kılıçsoy, who coordinated a splendid scissor kick and scored. The assistant referee ruled it offside, the VAR signaled it was good, and it was a spectacular 2-0 that went into halftime .
The restart was without any further changes, with Adopo coming on at the edge of the box in the 49th minute for a right-footed shot that was deflected for a corner. But shortly thereafter, Verona was reduced to ten men: Sarr, already booked in the 6th minute for an attacking foul on Mazzitelli, came on late in the second half to deny Zé Pedro, who had already cleared the ball . It was the second yellow card, resulting in a red card and Hellas were down to ten men.
Zanetti made a triple substitution in the 58th minute: Serdar, Al-Musrati, and Mosquera (who immediately threatened with a deflection off Caprile over the crossbar) were brought on for Harroui, Bernède, and Lirola. Pisacane, meanwhile, removed the two scorers, Mazzitelli and Kılıçsoy, in the 66th minute, to a standing ovation from the crowd, and replaced them with Sulemana and Borrelli .
Another team move in the 70th minute saw Adopo feed Luperto, who fired a powerful left-footed shot from the edge of the box, and Perilli made a superb save to prevent the score from going 3-0. Idrissi (79') came on for Obert, who provided the assist for the opener, and three minutes later Zanetti replaced Lovrić (despite having come on in the 29th minute) in favor of Niasse. But it was a dark night for Hellas, because in the 84th minute Esposito whipped in a corner to the near post, Adopo headed in a miracle from Perilli, and Sulemana tapped in from close range . The midfielder, who made his second Cagliari debut last Saturday in Florence, made a goal-scoring return to Unipol Domus.
For the final three and a half minutes plus injury time, Zappa and Pavoletti also came on for the cheering Palestra and Esposito. As soon as injury time began, a fantastic 4-0 was scored: Zappa, just come on, crossed into the center and found Idrissi, who headed in the header to make it 4-0, repeating the first-leg goal . It was a triumph for Cagliari.
