A Jewish coach of Cagliari was also a victim of Nazi-fascist racial persecution.
We are talking about Ernest “Egri” Erbstein, forced to flee to his Hungary to avoid the worst.
To remember Erbstein, on the occasion of the Day of Remembrance, is Be As One, the solidarity project of Cagliari Calcio.
"Today we remember all the people who bravely faced an immeasurable contempt towards themselves, often paying for it with their lives - explain the promoters of the initiative -. Among them there was also a coach, who a few years before the bloody persecution he reached at the Cagliari guide a historic result ".
With him Cagliari embarked on a ride that led him, on May 3, 1931, to his first historic promotion to Serie B, after the play-off won against Salernitana (1-1 away and 2-1 at home in front of the 10 thousand in via Pola ).
The following year an honorable 13th place, then the transfer to Bari, Lucchese and Turin. The flight to Hungary from Turin was also deported to a labor camp but managed to escape. In 1945, when the war was over, he returned to Turin. And he died 4 years later in the plane crash together with his Grande Torino: it was May 4, 1949, the Superga tragedy.
