While the regional table of the broad field fiddles over the choice of the gubernatorial candidate, Massimo Zedda moves forward and takes to the field for the municipal elections of Cagliari . The announcement should arrive this evening, in the meeting organized by his party, the Progressists, at 6.15 pm in Piazza Galilei: yesterday the person concerned was careful not to confirm the rumors of his candidacy to return to being mayor, but the very title given to the public assembly – “A program, a guide for Cagliari – is revealing.

The maneuvers

This is only partially surprising: it is no mystery that many in the centre-left have been thinking for some time about bringing Zedda back into play to reconquer the capital, after having ceded it to Paolo Truzzu in 2019. And he himself, faced with specific questions, in last year he had never ruled out the possibility.

What is surprising in this case is the timing, because tonight's announcement comes earlier , as mentioned, than the candidacy for the regional elections : which will also be held about three months before the administrative elections. In reality, the stalemate in which the Pd-M5S-led alliance seems to be entangled is probably a cause of the acceleration on Cagliari planned by the Progressives. In fact, the latter had in vain asked that the candidacies for all three major elections of 2024 be decided at the table: the Region and the Municipalities of Cagliari and Sassari. Zedda himself had spoken of "a three-pronged attack" to be composed in an organic way, because "you cannot think about the problems of the island without thinking about its two metropolitan areas".

The disappointed wait

That request fell on deaf ears, as did the request to choose the gubernatorial candidate with the primaries. And the Progressives do not seem convinced by the name of Alessandra Todde , which the 5Star Movement is preparing to officially indicate at the coalition table. In this context, the leap forward on Cagliari perhaps also serves to remind us that the party of Zedda, Francesca Ghirra, Francesco Agus and companions may not have enormous percentages, but without them it is impossible to win in the capital. And whoever does badly there is unlikely to win the Regionals.

For goodness sake, for now we can't talk about a threat of split from the wide field. But the novelty may give rise to some reflection. Also because in the municipal elections we vote with a double shift , and the story of Graziano Milia in Quartu teaches that even a candidate who is not blessed by the secretariats of the big parties can do it. Among the Democratic Party and its allies, yesterday the first unofficial reactions to the anticipations of Zedda's move were characterized by amazement and irritation. In short, the thing will have a heavy impact on the regional table.

" It will not be a candidacy against everything and everyone ", however, some voices close to the former mayor specify. Translated, Zedda should pose the question this evening in terms of "availability". He does not intend to state that he will still be active for the Municipality in 2024, but that he is ready to return to the office overlooking Via Roma which was his between 2011 and 2019. If there were other suitors in the coalition, he would agree to submit in the primaries: after all, his adventure in Cagliari was born exactly like this, surprisingly winning the battle against a very strong opponent, the former senator of the Democratic Party Antonello Cabras. It is clear, however, that the presence of a name like Zedda's will have considerable weight: to deny him the candidacy, the Democratic Party and the other allies would have to oppose equally authoritative hypotheses. It's not impossible, but not easy either.
