Success in Cagliari for the exhibition “The places and words of Enrico Berlinguer” set up in the Covered Walk and Galleria dello Sperone of the Bastione Saint Remy, in Cagliari. In the 59 days of its opening, from April 5 to June 2, it recorded 25,134 certified presences: people of all ages, some of whom returned several times, tourists and students . «The appreciation of the exhibition is tangible in the many writings that citizens have left, filling two weighty volumes. Alongside the exhibition», we read in a press release, «a film festival with five titles was organized by the Società Umanitaria, Cineteca Sarda, directed by Antonello Zanda. The Fondazione Teatro Lirico, chaired by Mario Marchetti, instead curated two musical events on the opening and closing days of the exhibition».

In addition to these events, the organizers enriched the cultural offering with 15 public debate initiatives involving 97 speakers, both male and female , in front of a large audience. "The topics discussed", the note reads, "have Berlinguerian roots but have been developed in a contemporary key: work, peace, social issues. The two solidarity initiatives with the population of Gaza subjected to a horrible massacre at the behest of the Israeli government were very well attended". The archives of Enrico Berlinguer, which the Gramsci Foundation has digitized and published in open mode, and original research carried out in the university environment, such as that on the political lexicon and the relationship with science and technology of the Sardinian leader, were presented as a national preview.

The exhibition was organized by the Enrico Berlinguer Association based in Rome and the Foundation of the same name based in Cagliari, with the support of the Region and the Municipality of Cagliari. "The partnership between the Region, the Municipality and the Foundation worked well thanks to the constant cooperation with the mayor Massimo Zedda and the Councilors for Culture of the Municipality and the Region Maria Francesca Chiappe and Ilaria Portas. The positive collaboration with the directorates and officials of the Departments of Culture of the Region and the Municipality was also essential."

The president of the Enrico Berlinguer Foundation, Salvatore Cherchi, in taking stock, declared that «the notable influx of public to the Cagliari exhibition – which repeats what was already recorded in the previous editions of Rome, Bologna, Sassari – indicates the persistence in the collective memory of a leader who died over forty years ago. Importantly, many young people went to the exhibition, meeting the figure of Enrico Berlinguer for the first time : an experience that leaves the mark of his moral depth. Once again, the nostalgia for politics conducted in a rigorous and credible way emerges: this feeling is very widespread among citizens, regardless of their political position. This feeling, which is also a desire for commitment, should be grasped by everyone, starting, obviously, with the forces of the left that refer to Berlinguer».

"It was not a celebration of the past but a reflection on the present and an attempt to imagine the future", highlighted the Councilor for Culture of the Municipality of Cagliari, Maria Francesca Chiappe. "Participation in the many debates on work, young people, the women's issue, information, science, peace showed us the civil passion of many people. And this was the essence of the exhibition". These assessments are shared by the mayor Massimo Zedda : "The message full of hope that Berlinguer left thinking of the new generations: that of good politics and coherence between the public and the private and between what is declared and how it is acted. This is needed and we must all take charge of it, from those who work in the institutions, above all, to civil society".
