With the latest release in July, in the territory between Bosa and Montresta, all the Bonelli eagle specimens are flying in the skies of Sardinia , as foreseen in the "Aquila a life" project.
"In 2022, thanks to the community project, seven eagles arrived in Sardinia from Spain (five) and Sicily (two) , then released in Planargia - recalled the environmental defense councilor, Gianni Lampis -. In the area release, selected by Ispra and Forestas, a special large pre-acclimatization aviary was set up, where the specimens were constantly monitored and 'trained' to life in nature, spending, before release, a period of acclimatization to the inside the aviary, managed by the men of Forestas. From free they are monitored thanks to special GPS transmitters, so as to be able to intervene in case of need and identify suitable habitats and sites for this species ".
The project to reintroduce the Bonelli's eagle in Sardinia kicks off in 2018 and, so far, has completed the release in the wild of 33 specimens : 13 are still monitored via GPS, while 9 have lost GPS signals.
“Thanks to the constant monitoring of the movements of eagles carried out in collaboration by Forestas and Ispra - says the Region - both behavior and habits can be better understood, helping to improve knowledge about the biology and ecology of this species. For example, the propensity, in the first years of life, to frequent wetlands, where eagles settle for long periods and find diversity and abundance of prey , confirming the inability to prey on large animals and preferring crows, aquatic birds and , more rarely, other birds of prey such as the buzzard ".
"The project aims to stabilize the specimens , so that the first pairs can form and can begin to reproduce from next year. Furthermore, the work of identifying the best habitats and suitable sites on the island will continue, which will also allow for adapt and protect power lines, avoiding other cases of electrocution "concluded Lampis.
