The ban on high quality breeders and mares registered in herd books or breed registers, to improve production and increase the quality of beef, has had an impact and concretely contributed to the growth of the beef sector in Sardinia, which is currently in second place. in Italy for number of animals, after Piedmont, and in fourth place for number of herds after Piedmont, Lazio and Sicily.

This is what Coldiretti affirms in a note, in which it is specified that the herd of beef cattle in Sardinia is made up of over 100,000 heads (10.40% national) and about 3,700 farms (8.76% national).

The sector in 10 years (2011 - 2021) has grown by 5.7% in number of heads, while farms have decreased by 0.58%, confirming the evolution, growth and specialization that has taken place.

"The ban on breeding stock has given a significant contribution to improving the quality of beef cattle, bringing the sector, not only numerically but also qualitatively, to the top in Italy" says Michele Filigheddu, breeder and manager of Coldiretti Northern Sardinia, who with colleagues is preparing for the upcoming trade fairs that are resuming after two years of hiatus, such as the national one in Bastia Umbra (from 1 to 3 April) and the regional fair of Charolaise and Limousine beef cattle scheduled for 23 April after the restart last autumn.

Many breeders, waiting for the new call for breeding and mares for which the Regional Council resolved on 24 March last, planning € 3,500,000 also for unanswered applications for 2020, have not yet received the contribution of last year's applications as well as some even from previous years.

"Today it is essential for a company to have certainty about the timing of receipt of contributions - says the director of Coldiretti North Sardinia Ermanno Mazzetti -. To suffer from this uncertainty are above all sectors like this of beef cattle which over the years has grown and professionalized considerably. It becomes vital in historical periods like these in which liquidity is vital after two years of pandemic and the record high prices of raw materials that have led to skyrocketing production costs. they can liquidate the back applications and have the new announcement ".
