On the tables of Italians for Christmas, two out of three lambs will be marked Igp di Sardegna and the Consortium of protection (Contas) this year celebrates 20 years since its foundation: with more than 5 thousand members, it is confirmed as the main reality of suckling lamb in the Village.

According to the report drawn up by Contas, at Christmas a little less than 50% of the total number of lambs of the year (400 thousand head) is slaughtered, 40% of which in the last week before Christmas. About 25% of these are sent to Spain, which is confirmed as the main foreign Christmas market.

"Lamb of Sardinia Igp is present in the refrigerated counters of the main Italian distribution brands, where this year you will find the double community logo that identifies the Igp of Sardinia also in the trays - says the director of the Consortium, Alessandro Mazzette -. a positive trend in sales in all Italian regions, both in those where dairy lamb is historically consumed, especially in Sardinia and Lazio, but also in those where there is less tradition such as Lombardy and Piedmont. Consumers are always looking for more is the one marked Igp, as confirmed by the slaughterers who for more than 90 percent have requests for only Igp lamb. It means that the choice of products to bring to the table is increasingly aware and thoughtful ".

As usual, also this year the Consortium has intensified checks in the refrigerated counters and in the slaughterhouses: "By purchasing the IGP-branded suckling lamb of Sardinia, you are sure to bring to the table a product born, raised and slaughtered on the island. following a specific disciplinary - adds the president Battista Cualbu -. The invitation is to read the labels carefully and choose Sardinian, thus making an ethical purchase as they are local products, at km 0 and helping to support the 'local economy ".
