"It's my first time in Sardinia, it's incredible," said Andrea Motis at the opening of the "Shadows & Colors" concert, immediately captivating the audience at the Teatro Verdi in Sassari with his grace and simplicity. A classy concert marked the second double date (morning and evening) of the Be in Jazz festival, organized by the Blue Note-Orchestra Jazz della Sardegna association.
A soft and caressing voice, like the notes of his trumpet, which lean more toward the colors of Chat Baker than the virtuosity or aggressiveness of other famous trumpeters. A former child prodigy who was already performing at 15 with Joan Chamorro, Andrea Motis is now 30 and has refined his interpretations and even his compositions. A clear voice that seems slight, yet instead modulates the singing to the spirit of the songs, giving its best on those that draw from the Iberian Peninsula and South America, such as "Sombre de la," "Iracema," "Tabacaria," and "Matilda."
The Sardinia Jazz Orchestra, conducted by Gavino Mele, confirms the quality that makes it one of the best ensembles in Italy: it successfully blends with the style of its guest star. The trumpet and saxophone solos by the various musicians are precise and smooth. Andrea Motis appreciates it, as do the audience.
