While Naples is preparing to become the world capital of sailing in 2027, in Sardinia there is only the wind in your face .
A golden opportunity that went up in smoke, which according to the Five Star Movement has only one person responsible: the former Solinas Administration, guilty – they say – of having missed the target spectacularly. And now the party of President Alessandra Todde is not sparing with accusations, transforming the failed landing of the America's Cup into a political case.
The verdict came just a few hours ago: the 2027 America's Cup will be held in Naples. A success for the Campania capital, a bitter defeat for Sardinia, which would have had all the credentials to host one of the most prestigious sporting events in the world. But the Island, it seems, hasn't even seriously tried.
According to the regional councilor of the Five Star Movement Gianluca Mandas, the responsibility lies entirely with the previous administration led by Christian Solinas.
"Administrative shortsightedness and a total lack of planning - Mandas accuses - meant that Sardinia excluded itself from a historic opportunity. The America's Cup could have brought enormous economic benefits, relaunching tourism and the nautical sector, but the then Tourism Department preferred to stay in port".
The M5S speaks of a "missed opportunity" not only in terms of international visibility, but above all for the concrete effects that the event could have generated : investments, employment, promotion of the territory and relaunch of the Sardinian sailing tradition.
"Boating and major sporting events – Mandas insists – must become strategic levers for the development of the Island. And instead we have let everything be snatched from under our noses."
However, the councilor also claims the commitment of the current majority to correct the shot : «In the recent financial and programming documents – he underlines – we have included resources and concrete tools to support these sectors. Enough of reckless mistakes: Sardinia must return to being a protagonist, not a spectator».
