26.5 percent of Sardinians (about 270,000 people aged between 20 and 64) declare they are "uninterested" in work , the national average is 22.1 percent. Not only that: only 49.5% of women aged 20-64 are employed on the island, against a national figure of 53.2%.

From these data contained in the Cna Sardegna report on demographic evolution and the decline in employment, it is necessary to increase the share of the active population to ensure that the Sardinian production system has sufficient employment .

Over the next ten years, it is calculated that regional added value could contract by 16% and per capita income by 6.4%.

Between 2011 and 2021 in Sardinia the population of working age (between 15 and 64 years) decreased by 110 thousand units: a contraction of -9.8%, more than double the figure recorded at national level (-4.3% ). In the same period, the island recorded 91,000 fewer residents (-8.2%).

And it is probable that in the next decade the size of the decline in the working-age population will reach at least 188 thousand units (-18.6%) with a reduction in the number of employed between 97 thousand (-17.7%) and 84 thousand units (-15.4%).

The EU Commission has proposed to raise the employment rate of the population aged 20-64 to 75% by 2020: in 2020 in Italy the employment rate has not gone beyond 62.7%, in Sardinia it has stopped at 53, 6%.

For the artisan confederation, without effective labor policies to combat depopulation and falling birth rates and without a serious and credible development plan, the demographic transformations underway will lead to a sharp decline in the number of employed people and a decisive setback of the regional economic system.

Added to this is the aging of the population which will have among its consequences a marked increase in spending on health and assistance, while the low employment and income levels will increase spending on wage supplementation measures, subtracting significant shares from investments in the area of wealth produced.
