The runoff for the municipal elections remains, at least for now.

Fratelli d'Italia has in fact withdrawn the amendment to the so-called Elections Decree , which provided for a stop to the "play-off" between the two candidates for mayor with the most votes in the first round in municipalities with more than 15 thousand inhabitants.

The announcement was made to colleagues of the League by the speaker, the Melonian Alberto Balboni . “Although I agree, I would like to inform my colleagues that my request is for withdrawal,” Balboni said regarding the amendment being examined by the Senate. «I agree on the merits, it is a system that has its dignity - added Balboni - but I don't see the opportunity to insert it at this moment. It changes the rules in force and would have needed more discussion . Such an important topic should have been addressed with a very different method."

There are over 3,700 Italian municipalities voting in the coming months, of which 228 with more than 15 thousand inhabitants.

In Sardinia, the citizens of 27 municipalities will go to the polls, including Cagliari, Sassari and Alghero.

Satisfaction with the withdrawal of the amendment was expressed by the Democratic Party: «Changing unilaterally and by decree the rules on the ballot in municipalities over 15 thousand inhabitants just three months before the municipal elections would be an unprecedented coup », commented the senator of the Democratic Party Dario Parrini , vice-president of the Constitutional Affairs commission. «Even more so – he added – if this happens with an amendment not presented in commission and deposited at the last minute only in the chamber , to surreptitiously and secretly prevent any serious in-depth analysis on the topic».
