The road to reaching the 50,000 signatures needed for the bill on compensation for victims of miscarriages of justice is still long. To date, according to the Ministry of Justice's Referendum and Popular Initiatives portal, the number of signatures has stalled at 11%, equivalent to 5,957.

The bill, which bears the name of Beniamino Zuncheddu – the Sardinian shepherd who remained in prison for 33 years for a triple homicide in 1991, of which he was acquitted in January 2024 after a review trial – provides for an allowance to be paid from the date of acquittal until the compensation sentence in the event of a miscarriage of justice .

This is a way, according to the promoters, to fill a regulatory gap that can leave victims without any financial support for years.

Yesterday, Forza Italia's regional coordinator and MP, Pietro Pittalis, announced the party's support for the proposal, which consists of a single article with five paragraphs.

Starting today, the Radical Party is mobilizing, starting a tour of the squares of Nuoro to accelerate the collection of signatures.

The "Sardinian caravan" departs from San Teodoro, then passes through Budoni and Orosei, with the presence of Valter Marcialis, a forensic sound engineer who followed the Zuncheddu affair, and the Radical lawyers Angela Furlan, Simona Giannetti, Gemma Gasponi, and Anna Maria Nalisani, along with other activists and leaders.

"The time between an acquittal and a compensation ruling can last up to ten years," the Radicals explain. "A civilized law must be passed to fill a legislative gap that can no longer be postponed."
