Typhoon Shanshan lashes Japan: 3 dead, one missing

At least three people were killed and a fourth is missing in southwestern Japan after Typhoon Shanshan made landfall in Kagoshima Prefecture , bringing torrential rain and winds of more than 250 kilometers per hour .
“Since this typhoon is moving slowly, the total amount of rainfall could be quite large,” Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said at a news conference, also noting that two people were seriously injured .
Japan's most powerful typhoon this year made landfall near the city of Satsumasendai in Kagoshima Prefecture around 8 a.m. (1 a.m. GMT). The island of Kyushu is home to 12.5 million people.
Authorities had issued the highest level of alert , advising hundreds of thousands of people to evacuate due to the risk of flooding, landslides and storm surges.
In the coastal city of Miyazaki , 26 people have been injured so far, with more than 100 buildings damaged , a local official said. Nine more people were injured in nearby Kagoshima. No one is in danger of dying.
