Donald Trump has just begun to dismantle the Chavista regime in Venezuela, but he already seems focused on his next imperialist ambitions : "The United States needs Greenland for defense reasons," the White House president declared in an interview with the Atlantic. These comments followed a post written by the wife of one of Trump's advisers, featuring a map of the Arctic island colored in the colors of the American flag and a single, threatening word: "Soon!" Enough to provoke a response from Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who urged the United States to "end the threats against a historic ally." "I must make this clear to the United States: it is absolutely absurd to claim that the US should take control of Greenland," she added, referring to the autonomous territory under the Danish crown.
The incriminating post was published on social media by Katie Miller, wife of Trump's deputy chief of staff, Stephen Miller, the evening after the US military operation in Venezuela that led to the capture of Nicolas Maduro, followed by the tycoon's announcement that the United States will manage the transition in Caracas. Miller, who serves as White House deputy chief of staff, is considered the architect of much of the administration's policies, so his wife's post carries significant weight.
Among other things, she served in the press office at the Department of Homeland Security during Trump's first term and also worked in communications for then-Vice President Mike Pence. The American president has repeatedly made public his vision for the immense ice island, an autonomous territory under the Danish crown and rich in minerals essential for high-tech: it should be annexed by the United States for national security reasons. In a bid to strengthen his position in a key maritime trade area, contested by superpowers China and Russia, Trump even appointed his own envoy to Greenland, sparking protests in Copenhagen, with the support of the European Union.
