A shooting has left several people dead in Seattle , in the northwest of the United States, near the iconic Space Needle tower. The local police department announced this on X.

The alarm was raised during the 'Bite of Seattle,' a food festival with numerous booths.

Two people were pronounced dead at the scene and four others, the youngest a 2-year-old, were transported to Harborview Medical Center, the fire department said.

Another person later showed up at another hospital with a gunshot wound, authorities added.

Seattle Deputy Police Chief Tyrone Davis said one of the victims taken to the hospital later died.

The suspected attacker has been arrested, but authorities are still searching for a person believed to be involved in the shooting, Davis added, after Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson initially said two people had been arrested.

According to an initial reconstruction, the shooting began when two people opened fire on each other, involving other bystanders: the investigation, police specified, is still ongoing and "there is no threat to the community."
