Israel today commemorates the 1,200 victims of the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, with events organized in 400 locations, starting at 6:29 a.m., when the Palestinian militants' raid began, and continuing until the evening with a national ceremony in Tel Aviv.
On the third anniversary of the massacre , President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella also sent a message of condolences to the Jewish State: "Today marks the tragic anniversary of the despicable attack perpetrated by Hamas against numerous Israeli civilians . Many young people, including those of other nationalities, were vilely attacked, held hostage, or deprived of their lives while gathered for a festive occasion. Others were brutally killed or kidnapped from their homes, with no mercy shown to children or the elderly. Acts of terrorism can never be justified or shelved. They will remain, for all peoples, a painful reminder to forever condemn and firmly reject, in the Middle East and throughout the world, the barbaric and uncivilized scourges of terrorism, anti-Semitism, and every form of ethnic and religious hatred."
Mattarella also remembered the victims of the Israeli reaction following the attack, which, he emphasized, "reopened a dramatic phase of instability and violence in the region. The atrocious suffering caused is compounded by that which, even more so since then, has weighed on multitudes of Palestinians. The military operations conducted by Israeli forces in Gaza," Mattarella added, "have caused human and material devastation of intolerable severity. At the same time, the process of erosion of territories attributed to the Palestinian National Authority is unacceptable."
"The spiral of unprecedented violence must be stopped," concluded the Head of State, "by instead recreating the conditions, today profoundly compromised, for coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians within the framework of 'Two Peoples, Two States,' so that they can live peacefully side by side."
"Three years ago, on October 7, 2023, Hamas terrorist attacks massacred men, women, and children, attacked young people gathered to listen to music, and tore innocent people from their families to drag them into captivity," Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wrote. "Today," she added, "we remember the victims of that barbarity and renew our closeness to their loved ones, to those who suffered the horror of kidnapping, and to the Israeli people."
"The time that has passed," the President of the Republic concluded, "does not diminish the gravity of those crimes. No cause can justify the deliberate massacre of innocents. Remembering it also means renewing our commitment to fighting all forms of anti-Semitism."
