A 3-year-old boy died on Wednesday afternoon while alone in a car in Saint-Gratien, Val-d'Oise, in the Ile de France region, during a heatwave , several sources learned today.
The child was "found by his parents in the vehicle parked in front of their home," a police source said, while the fire department confirmed his death.
Meanwhile, Paris Mayor Emmanuel Grégoire is urging residents not to dive from the bridges of the Canal Saint-Martin, which has been open to swimming since last week to alleviate the scorching heatwave currently affecting the French capital and the rest of the country.
The mayor spoke of around "fifty injuries, although not seriously," among those who dived from the bridges of the famous Parisian canal immortalized in films such as Jean Vigo's L'Atalante.
"If we say we shouldn't dive from bridges, it's because there's a statistical risk," Grégoire warned, urging the public to exercise extreme caution in the heat, starting with the most vulnerable. But also young people. "Above all, we shouldn't think we're omnipotent, and I say this especially to young people. Yesterday, at 7:30 p.m., I saw about a hundred people jogging. Frankly, that's not responsible," he warned, urging people to "take a few days off from exercise."
