“I hope this is the beginning of long-term trade negotiations, for long-term trade benefits between the US and the EU.”
This was stated by US Vice President JD Vance at the trilateral meeting organized at Palazzo Chigi with European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni hosting the event.
During the three-way summit – organized thanks to the presence in Rome of Washington's number two and the leader of Brussels on the occasion of the inauguration mass of Pope Leo XIV – the Prime Minister also said she was convinced that a "new beginning" could take place in relations between the Trump administration and the EU , in particular on tariffs, one of the issues at the center of the meeting.
"I am very proud to have the opportunity today to host two of the leaders of the United States and the European Union to begin a dialogue," Meloni said. Adding: "We know that there are many issues to discuss" and "problems that must be overcome. Above all, we know how fundamental our relations are in the context of a West that wants to maintain its unity and its strength."
"As I have said repeatedly , Europe is an important ally of the United States, the individual European states are important allies of the United States: but of course there are things on which we disagree, as often happens between friends , on issues such as trade for example, but there are also many things on which we agree and on which we can work together", Vance underlined again.
For her part, Von der Leyen explained: " We have a very special and close relationship with the United States. Looking at trade, we have the largest trade relationship in the world, with over 1.5 trillion dollars a year, we are very close, we have exchanged papers that our experts are studying in depth, discussing the details. Everyone knows that the devil is in the details, but what unites us is that together we want a good deal for both sides."
