Iran reportedly spent the two months following the signing of the memorandum of understanding with the United States preparing for an escalation of fighting rather than engaging in diplomacy, according to the Wall Street Journal, citing Iranian and Arab officials. Tehran believes the US is merely stalling for a future attack.

Thus, in the last 60 days of the ceasefire, which expires today, Iran has reportedly stepped up production of missiles and drones and appointed hardline figures to key positions.

The Wall Street Journal says Arab intelligence officials have signaled a “strategic shift” among Iranian leaders to “prepare their forces to expand the war.”
