The Supreme Court (5 to 4) upholds the right to citizenship by birth, dealing a blow to Donald Trump. Repealing birthright citizenship was a key issue in the tycoon's campaign , and one of the first measures signed in the Oval Office was its abolition.
"Citizenship, then as now, is having the right to have rights: the right to participate freely in our political community," said Chief Justice John Roberts, emphasizing that the Fourteenth Amendment extends this promise "to every person born into this land. Today we keep that promise."
The 14th Amendment provides that “all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States,” Roberts added.
