"We didn't need their support. We won the war. It was somehow irrelevant! I have to go, I have a big meeting going on, but we won the war in Iran. We didn't need their help. Thank you very much."
This was US President Donald Trump's statement in a phone call with Daniele Compatangelo, reported this morning on La7's Omnibus, responding to a question about the role of European leaders and the G7 in the Iran crisis. Trump argued that the support of European allies was "irrelevant," claiming that the US achieved its objectives without their input.
According to Axios, the possible signing ceremony of a "memorandum of understanding" between Washington and Tehran could take place "in the next few days" in Geneva: yesterday, four US C-17 aircraft took off for Europe carrying "material for a possible trip" to the Swiss city by US Vice President J.D. Vance, whom Donald Trump has designated as the person in charge of signing the preliminary agreement.
According to a diplomat from one of the countries mediating between Washington and Tehran, cited by Axios on condition of anonymity, the text of the US-Iran memorandum contains agreements such as "the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz without tolls" and "an easing of sanctions" against the Islamic Republic.
Furthermore, it establishes "a 60-day extension of the ceasefire" between the two warring countries, which is also valid in Lebanon, although no further details are currently available on this last point. Furthermore, the text "includes a framework addressing the issue of Iran's enriched uranium stockpiles," although "any action regarding Iran's nuclear program would be contingent on a second, more detailed agreement."
The same diplomat added that Washington and Tehran had agreed on the text of the memorandum, acknowledging however that "final approval may still be necessary."
Axios then quotes a "senior US official" according to whom US President Donald Trump has "accepted that one of the possible solutions" to the nuclear issue is the "down-blending of Iranian highly enriched uranium within the country under the supervision of UN inspectors".
Two sources familiar with the situation, the US newspaper continues, later stated that the agreement had been approved "at high levels" of the Iranian leadership, but at the moment "probably not yet by Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei."
