"I continue to follow with dismay the situation in the Middle East , as in other regions of the world torn by war and violence. We cannot remain silent in the face of the suffering of so many people, defenseless victims of these conflicts. Whatever hurts them, hurts all of humanity," the Pope said during the Sunday Angelus.

The Pontiff launched a new appeal for peace because wars, he said, "are a scandal for the entire human family." "May hostilities cease and paths of peace finally be opened," the Holy Father added.
