The Earth trembles: earthquakes in Afghanistan, Mexico and Papua New Guinea
The most affected area is the province of Herat where at least 2 thousand have diedThree violent earthquakes have occurred in the past few hours - with tremors above magnitude 6.0 - in three distinct parts of the planet: Afghanistan, Mexico and Papua New Guinea . There are hundreds of victims.
In Afghanistan the affected area is that of the western province of Herat . The dead, said the Taliban government in Kabul, are more than 2 thousand.
Some material damage, but fortunately no victims in the state of Oaxaca, in southern Mexico , where the earthquake had the town of Matias Romero as its epicenter. Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador wanted to send a "hug to all the inhabitants of the Isthmus" of Tehuantepec, specifying that "the federal authorities are attentive and are keeping watch".
There is also great fear in Papua New Guinea, where a 6.7 magnitude earthquake hit the eastern regions . The depth was 53 kilometers and the epicenter was recorded at approximately 56.6 kilometers south-east of the city of Madang, the USGS specified, but the authorities reported no victims or material damage. Papua New Guinea is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a huge concatenation of faults, with volcanoes and seismic zones around the largest ocean, created by friction between tectonic plates and which includes the South and North Pacific coasts America, Japan and Indonesia among others.
Earthquakes are frequent but rarely cause serious damage.
