The case of Cecilia Sala is under investigation and has nothing to do with that of Mohammad Abedini Najafabadi, the Iranian engineer arrested in Malpensa on a US warrant for the accusation of exporting sensitive US technology to Iran and violating US sanctions.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said: "The Italian journalist was arrested for violating the laws of the Islamic Republic, as stated in a statement by the Foreign Media Department of the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance. The announcement of the latest developments and details of the case is up to the spokesman of the judiciary (Asghar Jahangir)," he said.
Cecilia Sala, in short, is detained "for violating Iranian laws", while on the contrary, "the measure taken by the US against Abedini is a sort of hostage-taking", added Baghaei.
