Tehran: "Hormuz is closed." Trump: "The Strait is open, we bombed them."
Iran, on the other hand, announced new restrictions on navigation "due to recent illegal maneuvers by U.S. military forces."“The Strait of Hormuz is open, we have bombed them heavily.”
This was US President Donald Trump's comment in an interview with NBC, returning to the situation of the strategic maritime passage between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, at the heart of tensions between Washington and Tehran following the military escalation in the region.
According to Trump, therefore, the Strait is operational despite Iranian accusations of having limited transit through it.
These words contradict what Tehran reported, which announced new navigation restrictions in the past few hours. "Due to recent illegal maneuvers by U.S. military forces in the region, transit through the Strait of Hormuz is currently impossible," the Persian Gulf Straits Authority (PGSA) stated on Sunday, adding: "As soon as stability and calm are restored, all requests will be reviewed, according to a predetermined timeline, and the necessary permits will be issued."
Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz, attacking ships, laying sea mines and imposing fees for the "safe" navigation of vessels in the canal, since the war between the United States and Israel began on February 28. The PGSA, established by Iran in May, aims to manage the transit of ships and permanently change the status of the Strait of Hormuz.
