The Swiss government today decided to "exceptional waive reimbursement" for medical expenses amounting to 1.5 million francs for treating Italians injured in the New Year's Eve fire in Crans-Montana.

Swiss President Guy Parmelin informed Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of the decision.

A statement from the Swiss government said: "The Swiss government is fully aware of the immense pain that weighs on the families of the victims and on the people who will suffer for the rest of their lives from the serious injuries they suffered," Parmelin explained.

"I am very pleased to hear President Guy Parmelin's announcement that Switzerland is waiving its right to seek reimbursement for the medical expenses of the Italian victims of the Crans-Montana tragedy treated in Swiss hospitals. I am delighted with this solution: no burden will fall on their families or on Italy," said Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in a statement.

"My thoughts," she added, "are once again with the families of the victims and the injured children, who are facing immense pain with extraordinary dignity and strength. I reiterate the Italian government's sincere sympathy, which will continue to stand by them. I thank President Parmelin for his sensitivity. This decision," Meloni concluded, "confirms the solidity of the relationship between our nations."
