The American Supreme Court rejects the request of special prosecutor Jack Smith to examine quickly the issue of presidential immunity claimed by Donald Trump in the proceedings for the assault on Congress.

Smith had asked the wise men to urgently consider immunity by bypassing the normal process in the courts of appeal. A request for expedited review rejected by the Supreme Court without any explanation. The rejection risks postponing the start of Trump's trials and represents a victory for the former president, who had asked the wise men not to speed up the examination.

Without explanation and without public dissent, the Supreme Court has indicated that it will let appeals courts look at the issue first. Failure to intervene quickly risks postponing the trials against Trump with consequences also for the electoral campaign.

Smith, asking the Supreme Court to speed up the examination, had linked the Trump case to that of Richard Nixon in 1974, when the then president was forced by wise men's decision to hand over White House information to be used in the Watergate trial.
