A failure in landlines and 112 emergency numbers has affected some areas of Spain, particularly in the Valencian Community , in the south-east, and in the northern region of the Basque Country.
According to sources from the company Telefonica, quoted by radio Cadena Ser, the problems are caused by "network upgrade work that has affected punctual services in some companies" and the operator assures that it is "working to resolve them".
In the two regions mentioned, the faults prevented calls to the emergency number 112 , and the Interior Departments of the Basque Country and the Valencian Community activated alternative numbers for emergencies.
According to the web site Downdetector, which reports problems in business services, the failures began shortly after 2 am and mainly affected the fixed internet service, for 72%, while 18% of the reports received indicated the absence of a signal and 10% a total 'blackout'.
The failures have raised concerns, following the power blackout that darkened the Iberian Peninsula on April 28.
