Former President of the French Republic, Nicolas Sarkozy, was found guilty of illegally funding his 2012 election campaign, in the so-called "Bygmalion" bogus case, and sentenced to one year in prison without parole.

Caroline Viguier, the president of the court, defined the alleged facts "of unprecedented gravity", stressing that Sarkozy, together with other of the 14 defendants, "continued the organization of rallies, allowed new performances, ordered expenses and voluntarily omitted , as a candidate, to exercise control over expenditure ".

Already sentenced last March to 3 years in prison (one without parole) for corruption and trafficking of influences in the case of "wiretapping", the former president has appealed against that sentence.
