«I have decided to convene the Council of Ministers today, to dissolve the Chambers and call early elections for November 29th» .

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said this in an institutional statement from the Moncloa Palace.

"After having duly informed the Head of State, I have decided to convene an extraordinary Council of Ministers this morning to dissolve the Cortes Generales (the two houses of Parliament, ed.) and call general elections, which will be held on Sunday, November 29, in accordance with the terms established by law," Sanchez announced. "The time has therefore come," he emphasized, "for you, Spanish citizens, to decide what future you want for yourselves and for your country."

The decision comes in the wake of street protests following the rejection of the housing decrees in Congress , measures proposed by the government to address the housing emergency following the eviction of a woman. After consulting with ministers and the Socialist Party, the Prime Minister decided to bring forward the legislative term's natural expiration date, scheduled for July 2027.

Sanchez, 54, is one of Europe's longest-serving leaders, having been Spanish Prime Minister since 2018. Reviewing his last term, he emphasized: "We did everything we could to defend the interests of the Spanish people, inequality was reduced, and the economy is the fastest growing in Europe. Today, there is dissatisfaction; we too have made mistakes, but to correct them, we need the people, a larger majority in Parliament. This is why I have decided to call new elections ."
