The World Health Organization declared a global health emergency yesterday due to a rare strain of Ebola .

The dangerous virus has reportedly killed dozens of people in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In detail, there are 246 suspected cases and 80 deaths, but the WHO believes that the outbreak could be much larger than what is currently identified.

The outbreak is not currently classified as a pandemic because, according to the WHO, it does not meet the criteria.

The most recent Ebola outbreak in the country was identified in September 2025. The current one is located in Ituri province, bordering Uganda and South Sudan . It is caused by the Bundibugyo strain of the virus, which has a very high fatality rate and for which there is currently no vaccine or specific treatment.
