"Luigi Gasperin is also free. He is now at our embassy in Caracas. In recent days, we obtained an order for his release. He was released from prison last night." This is what Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani wrote in X.

A third Italian has also been released, following the aid worker Alberto Trentini and the entrepreneur Mario Burlò, who had been locked up during the Nicolas Maduro regime.

Gasperin, 77, was arrested on August 7, 2025, in Maturín, where he owns a company.

According to the Farnesina, Gasperin is exhausted but well and would like to stay in the South American country "in the state of Monagas, where his company is located."
