Snake Island (Zmiinyi in Ukraine) is a small island 20 miles south of the Ukrainian coast. It is one of the southernmost settlements in the country and is fundamental in establishing the borders of Ukraine's territorial waters in the Black Sea. Strategically important also because it is rich in natural gas and oil.
