A telephone conversation lasting nearly an hour took place this afternoon between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump .
The focus was on finding a solution to the war in Ukraine. The Russian president told his US counterpart that he wanted to seek a negotiated solution to the conflict and that Moscow "will not abandon its efforts to eliminate the root causes" of the war , Russian presidential adviser Yuri Ushakov said.
Russia "will not give up its goals" in Ukraine, even though the Kremlin is open to continuing negotiations with Kiev, Putin also said. "Our president also said that Russia will pursue its goals, namely the elimination of the well-known causes that led to the current situation," Ushakov said.
His conditions for peace in Ukraine are the cession of four partially occupied regions, as well as Crimea annexed in 2014, and the renunciation of membership in NATO .
The two presidents also discussed the situation regarding Iran and agreed to continue their contacts on this issue, with Putin saying that he was looking for a "political and diplomatic" solution . There was no talk of stopping the supply of US weapons to Kiev, "the topic was not touched upon". The two leaders finally "confirmed their mutual interest in realizing a series of promising economic projects - concluded the representative of Moscow - especially in the energy and space research sectors".
The two leaders have already spoken on the phone five times since Trump returned to the White House in January , with the aim of ending the conflict in Ukraine as quickly as possible.
