The example of the Soviet soldiers who gave their lives to defeat Nazism today "inspires the soldiers who carry out their duty in the special military operation" in Ukraine and "resist an aggressive force that is supported by the entire NATO bloc."

Russian President Vladimir Putin made this statement during the parade in Red Square marking the 81st anniversary of the victory in World War II. Veterans of the conflict in Ukraine participated in the small-scale event, without the deployment of military equipment.

As is tradition, the event opened with a parade of a picket carrying the Russian flag and that of the Soviet Union, presented as the one raised in Berlin on the day Moscow's troops took control of the capital of the Third Reich.

Putin added that the country's fate will be decided not by the soldiers alone, but by the entire Russian people. "By remaining united, victory will always be ours," the Kremlin leader concluded.
