President Herzog gives Eisenkot the task of forming a government: he has 28 days to do so
The prime minister-designate: "This is one of the most fragile moments for our country's democracy. Credible leadership is urgently needed."Israeli President Isaac Herzog officially entrusted Yashar leader Gadi Eisenkot with the task of forming a new government after the October 27 elections . The ceremony took place at the presidential residence in Jerusalem and was broadcast live.
Eisenkot now has 28 days, according to the Basic Law, to form a new cabinet . If more time is needed, the president can grant an extension of up to an additional 14 days.
Eisenkot's name was put forward during consultations with President Herzog by political forces representing a total of 67 Knesset members. The name of outgoing President and Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu, on the other hand, was put forward by parties representing a total of 46 members of Parliament.
Netanyahu, therefore, is exiting the scene. At least for now, after having been Israeli prime minister for a total of 20 years, leading six governments from 1996 to today .
"I expect Gadi Eisenkot to do everything he can to form a government that represents the entire country, both those who supported him and those who didn't," said President Herzog.
These are the words of the prime minister-designate : "Israel is in a time of emergency, there are open war fronts and not all objectives have been achieved. We are in one of the most fragile moments that Israeli democracy has ever known due to the delegitimization of state institutions that has brought us to a dangerous point . For this reason, there is great urgency for a new leadership that can be trusted."
