A Turkish Airlines pilot has died after collapsing in flight , forcing Turkey's national carrier to make an emergency landing in New York.

The airline itself announced it.

The plane took off from the western US coastal city of Seattle on Tuesday evening, Turkish spokesman Yahya Ustun wrote in X: "The pilot of our Airbus 350 flight TK204 from Seattle to Istanbul collapsed during the flight. After an unsuccessful attempt to provide first aid, the crew decided to make an emergency landing, but the pilot died before landing."

The 59-year-old had been working for Turkish Airlines since 2007 and had passed a medical examination in March that revealed no health problems, Ustun wrote.
