The government of eastern Libya turned away a delegation of European ministers upon their arrival in Benghazi, including the head of the Interior Ministry Piantedosi. The delegation also included the EU Commissioner for Migration and the interior ministers of Greece and Malta.

The delegation had arrived by plane from Tripoli, where it had met with representatives of the UN-backed government of national unity, headed by interim Prime Minister Dbeibah. The parallel government in Benghazi, on the other hand, refers to General Haftar.

The note from the Eastern authorities speaks of "failure to comply with the entry and residence procedures for foreign diplomats established by the Libyan government".

The ministers were notified of their obligation to leave Libyan territory as "personae non gratae".

Embarrassment for Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, who limited himself to saying: «As soon as possible I will speak with Piantedosi about what happened».

According to sources at the Ministry of the Interior, it was simply a "protocol misunderstanding not managed by the Italian representation at the basis of the halt to the diplomatic mission" with the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi in Benghazi, Libya. The problem "never concerned the Italian component of the delegation at all, and even less so the bilateral relations with Italy."
