More than 200,000 people in total have so far been evacuated in southwest France and central Spain, where vast and uncontrollable forest fires are raging.

The number grew with the evacuation overnight of more than 60,000 people in the French Atlantic region of Bordeaux.

The fires prompted Madrid to declare a state of national emergency and French authorities to order the total evacuation, by land and sea, of several areas.

In southwestern France, a village-by-village evacuation has been ordered on the Cap Ferret peninsula, international media, including the BBC and the Guardian, report.
