An explosion that occurred late this morning at a refinery belonging to the Dutch subsidiary of the Swiss Gunvor Group in the port of Rotterdam has caused at least one death and several injuries, according to a police report, cited by several Dutch media.

Rotterdam police, according to AFP, said the explosion occurred around 11:30 a.m. at the Gunvor Energy Rotterdam plant, located in the Europoort, a port area that constitutes one of the world's largest chemical and petrochemical industrial zones. An investigation has been opened to determine the cause of the explosion.

The company said it was cooperating with authorities. According to regional media, several ambulances and a medical helicopter were dispatched to the scene shortly after the explosion.
