With 88 votes in favor and nine against, the US Senate approved the law to avoid the shutdown (i.e. the blocking of government activities and the salaries of public employees) in the United States.
The measure, presented by House speaker Kevin McCarthy, will allow the federal government to function for another 45 days but does not provide further funds for Ukraine and indeed provides cuts to aid.
“I expect support for Ukraine to continue,” US President Joe Biden said in a note after the approval of the bill that avoided the shutdown.
“Bipartisan majorities in the House and Senate voted to keep the government open, preventing an unnecessary crisis that would have inflicted unnecessary pain on millions of American workers,” Biden added, hoping as he said that support for Kiev “will not be interrupted,” because - he concluded - "I fully expect Parliament to maintain its commitment towards the Ukrainian people".
