Nobel Peace Prize to Navi Pillay, Mandela's lawyer and International Criminal Court judge

The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to Navi Pillay, a South African jurist of Indian origin, by the Oslo Academy "for her commitment to peace and international law."
Born in 1941, she was a lawyer for Nelson Mandela, a judge at the International Criminal Court , and a United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014. She has worked on Rwanda and Myanmar and was a member of the Independent Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory.
The prize, the Academy states, "is awarded to an individual who, with exceptional courage and integrity, has pioneered a more comprehensive global legal order. This year's laureate has played a pivotal role in ensuring that war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide are prosecuted."
Furthermore, the citation states, "Navi Pillay's commitment to universal legal principles and her steadfast moral compass have been constants throughout a long career."
"Navi Pillay," the Academy concludes, "is one of the great defenders of international legal principles of our time. Her illustrious career reminds us of the need to uphold, strengthen, and expand the rule of law globally. Navi Pillay's commitment to justice and human dignity represents a source of hope and inspiration for all who aspire to build a more peaceful world."
